Assimilation
Here is a link that talks about assimilation into American/other cultures.
Here is a link to the PBS website that discusses “New Americans”:
Here is a link that is specific to people living in new Jersey:
“It’s difficult to adapt to the culture here,” said Maria Jacinto, 32, who moved to the United States 10 years ago with her husband, Aristeo Jacinto, 36. “In the Hispanic tradition, the family comes first, not money. It’s important for our children not to be influenced too much by the gueros,” she said, using a term that means “blondies” but that she employs generally in reference to Americans. “I don’t want my children to be influenced by immoral things.”
Here is an article entitled: “Why They Won’t Assimilate”:
Assimilation is not a process magically initiated upon setting foot on Americanterra firma. Rather, it only occurs when one or both of two conditions are met: The foreign elements must have a desire to assimilate or the host nation must place pressure on them to do so. Unfortunately, neither is the case today because both immigrants and native-born Americans are far different than they once were.

ONLY RELIABLE SOURCES!
Pick ONE of the essay topics below for
your paper.
1. Sonny
described the streets of Harlem as having “…all that hatred
and misery and love. It's a wonder it doesn't blow the avenue
apart…” Using examples from the text and two outside sources, explain what he
meant by that statement.
2. What
statement does “Sonny’s Blues” make about the relationship
of art to life or about the relationship of art to suffering? Citing specific
examples from the text, write an essay about how Sonny uses art to aid in his
suffering.
3. Explain the
effect the environment has on Sonny and his brother (Harlem in the 1940s and
1950s). This would require that find out a bit more about each of the settings
through some research (Use the link on the blog about Harlem). Use examples
from the texts along with outside sources to support your thesis.
4.
Explain the relationship between
Jinx in “Live For Today” and the victims that come into the morgue. Why does
she seem to relate so well to them? What about her past makes her so
sympathetic towards these people? Use examples from the texts along with
outside sources (links about identity on blog) to support your thesis.
5.
We
talked in class about the reputation of Newark and how it is perceived by
others. We also discussed how the morgue in the story could be symbolic for
Newark (the forgotten members of society). For this question make the case that
the morgue is indeed symbolic of Newark. Use examples from the texts along with
outside sources to support your thesis.
6.
Pick NO
MORE THAN THREE characters from the three stories we have read so far and
explain how their identity is shaped or explained in their story. Use examples
from the texts along with outside sources (links about identity on blog) to
support your thesis.
7.
What
does the mother from “Girl” want for her daughter? What is she worried about
and how is she attempting to lead her daughter away from those situations? .
Use examples from the texts along with outside sources (links about identity on
blog) to support your thesis.

Below is the Bible scripture that Baldwin refers to:
“The cup of trembling”
22
Thus saith thy Lord the LORD, and thy God that pleadeth the cause of his people, Behold, I have taken out of thine hand the cup of trembling, even the dregs of the cup of my fury; thou shalt no more drink it again:
23
But I will put it into the hand of them that afflict thee; which have said to thy soul, Bow down, that we may go over: and thou hast laid thy body as the ground, and as the street, to them that went over.

Identity
These first two weeks of class we will discuss identity and how we become who we are. In "Live For Today", "Sonny's Blues" and "Girl" we will see a number of different characters and explore how they constructed their identity. Setting also plays a major role in these stories. We will look at how that effects these characters as well.
Below is the graffiti that inspired the title of "Live For Today." I believe it has since been erased and is no longer visible but you used to be able to see on the PATH train between Newark and Journal Square.
This link below has a wide variety of articles on how we construct identity. These will be very useful for the first essay which will be assigned on Thursday September 12.
