Pick ONE of the essay topics below for your paper.

1.       “Hills Like White Elephants” and “Good People” are two stories about two couples attempting to discuss having an abortion. For this essay, compare how the two couples talk to each other and what is different/similar about the way they do so. Use two RELIABLE outside sources.

2.       Describe how the  symbols of the story displays the conflict between Jig and her American—for example, the hills, the train station and its tracks and scenery, the beaded curtain separating the couple from the rest of "reasonable" humanity, and the train itself, along with the luggage, its stickers and its movement. Pick no more than THREE of these symbols and explain. Use two RELIABLE outside sources.

3.      Jig and the American have different goals. What are those goals, and how do their tactics during conversation help or hurt reaching their goals? Use two RELIABLE outside sources.

4.        In “Lusus Naturae,”“St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves” and Frankenstein, the cruel way in which society judges those who are different from us or not “normal” is a main issue. Using examples from AT LEAST 2 of these primary sources, explain how that is true in each of the stories. Use two RELIABLE outside sources.

5.       “St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves” can be looked at as cultural assimilation  story where the main character and the other girls in the home are forced to let go of what they are comfortable with (their own culture) and are expected to adapt to a new one. Explain how the girls struggle with this and use two RELIABLE outside sources to make clear comparisons.

6.       Explain what similarities and/or differences the main characters from “Lusus Naturae” and Frankenstein share. This would be a side by side comparison and contrast. Use two RELIABLE outside sources.

7.       Compare the issues or conflicts the families from at least TWO of the following stories: “Lusus Naturae,”“St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves” and Frankenstein treated faced with relation to the “monsters” from their stories. What did Lusus’ family do with her? How did Claudette’s family play a role? How did Dr. Frankenstein and the family in the house in the woods treat the monster? Use two RELIABLE outside sources.
