Pick ONE of the essay topics below for your paper.

1.       “Hills Like White Elephants” and “Good People” are two stories about two couples attempting to discuss having an abortion. For this essay, compare how the two couples talk to each other and what is different/similar about the way they do so. Use two RELIABLE outside sources.

2.       Describe how the  symbols of the story displays the conflict between Jig and her American—for example, the hills, the train station and its tracks and scenery, the beaded curtain separating the couple from the rest of "reasonable" humanity, and the train itself, along with the luggage, its stickers and its movement. Pick no more than THREE of these symbols and explain. Use two RELIABLE outside sources.

3.      Jig and the American have different goals. What are those goals, and how do their tactics during conversation help or hurt reaching their goals? Use two RELIABLE outside sources.

4.        In “Lusus Naturae,”“St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves” and Frankenstein, the cruel way in which society judges those who are different from us or not “normal” is a main issue. Using examples from AT LEAST 2 of these primary sources, explain how that is true in each of the stories. Use two RELIABLE outside sources.

5.       “St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves” can be looked at as cultural assimilation  story where the main character and the other girls in the home are forced to let go of what they are comfortable with (their own culture) and are expected to adapt to a new one. Explain how the girls struggle with this and use two RELIABLE outside sources to make clear comparisons.

6.       Explain what similarities and/or differences the main characters from “Lusus Naturae” and Frankenstein share. This would be a side by side comparison and contrast. Use two RELIABLE outside sources.

7.       Compare the issues or conflicts the families from at least TWO of the following stories: “Lusus Naturae,”“St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves” and Frankenstein treated faced with relation to the “monsters” from their stories. What did Lusus’ family do with her? How did Claudette’s family play a role? How did Dr. Frankenstein and the family in the house in the woods treat the monster? Use two RELIABLE outside sources.

Assimilation

Here is a link that talks about assimilation into American/other cultures.
Here is a link to the PBS website that discusses “New Americans”:
Here is a link that is specific to people living in new Jersey:
“It’s difficult to adapt to the culture here,” said Maria Jacinto, 32, who moved to the United States 10 years ago with her husband, Aristeo Jacinto, 36. “In the Hispanic tradition, the family comes first, not money. It’s important for our children not to be influenced too much by the gueros,” she said, using a term that means “blondies” but that she employs generally in reference to Americans. “I don’t want my children to be influenced by immoral things.”
Here is an article entitled: “Why They Won’t Assimilate”:
Assimilation is not a process magically initiated upon setting foot on Americanterra firma.  Rather, it only occurs when one or both of two conditions are met: The foreign elements must have a desire to assimilate or the host nation must place pressure on them to do so.  Unfortunately, neither is the case today because both immigrants and native-born Americans are far different than they once were.

Pick ONE of the essay topics below for your paper.

2.      What statement does “Sonny’s Blues” make about the relationship of art to life or about the relationship of art to suffering? Citing specific examples from the text, write an essay about how Sonny uses art to aid in his suffering.
3.      Explain the effect the environment has on Sonny and his brother (Harlem in the 1940s and 1950s). Use examples from the texts along with outside sources to support your thesis.

5.      We talked in class about the reputation of Newark and how it is perceived by others. Below is the Bible scripture that Baldwin refers to:
“The cup of trembling”
22
Thus saith thy Lord the LORD, and thy God that pleadeth the cause of his people, Behold, I have taken out of thine hand the cup of trembling, even the dregs of the cup of my fury; thou shalt no more drink it again:
23
But I will put it into the hand of them that afflict thee; which have said to thy soul, Bow down, that we may go over: and thou hast laid thy body as the ground, and as the street, to them that went over.

Identity

These first two weeks of class we will discuss identity and how we become who we are. In "Live For Today", "Sonny's Blues" and "Girl" we will see a number of different characters and explore how they constructed their identity. Setting also plays a major role in these stories. We will look at how that effects these characters as well.

Below is the graffiti that inspired the title of "Live For Today." I believe it has since been erased and is no longer visible but you used to be able to see on the PATH train between Newark and Journal Square.

This link below has a wide variety of articles on how we construct identity. These will be very useful for the first essay which will be assigned on Thursday September 12.
